I'd not heard of that terminology until your comment - so thank you for bringing it to my attention! I worried about whether or not it would work/go over well. In the end the joke is there serving as the threat, but several days later, I feel like maybe the ending could also be somewhat ambiguous? (Even if they aren't running from car warranty salesmen/scammers, if they have been located by those they may soon be found by scarier people). That was sort of the fun of writing it, though - it kind of grew and became about Gemma's paranoia and the lengths she went to to hide and start their lives over, and whether Gemma is even a reliable narrator.
