I thought the same thing. I remember eating pineapples in Hawai'i and thinking of how different it tasted there, too (maybe because it was served fresh and warm?). I know that Hawai'i is in the midst of its own political-GMO battle, but as far as I know, the pineapples grown there are non-GMO.
